Truth Behind Varicose Veins

As we get older we start noticing small changes occur all over our bodies. One of the most visually devastating changes some of us experience is the appearance of varicose veins. Varicose veins are enlarged veins that rise above the skin on the legs that are blue, red or flesh colored. Many times, these veins look like twisted and bulging cords. Varicose veins develop when the valves in the leg veins are no longer properly functioning. The blood then pools in the leg.

Varicose veins are not just cosmetic issues. Since varicose veins are a result of improperly working valves, other health complications can develop. In some cases, untreated varicose veins can lead to inefficient blood flow back to the heart and the development of the disease called chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). Women older than 50 are more likely to develop this disease; however, lifestyle choices can increase the changes of being diagnosed with CVI. Other factors that may cause CVI include a sedentary lifestyle, a job that requires prolonged standing, excess weight, pregnancies and smoking. A change in diet, regular exercise, avoiding tight clothes and avoiding prolonged standing or sitting can help reduce the changes of varicose veins from forming and the possibility of developing CVI. Whenever possible, elevate legs above the heart when sleeping or lounging around. This will help keep the blood flow moving to the heart. It is important to have varicose veins treated upon discovery and understand the different symptoms of CVI.

Symptoms of CVI include:

Depending upon the severity of the varicose veins, professional help may be necessary. The treatment to take care of varicose veins is minimally-invasive. Some treatments available include radio-frequency ablation, which uses heat to help seal the veins. Before, during and after the treatment process, it is important to eat healthy and exercise regularly.
