A Common Problem

For generations, both men and women have dealt with the unsightly and dangerous problem of varicose veins. Fortunately, medical advances provide many new ways to deal with this malady and restore your veins. That is our mission and passion at Restoration Vein Care, and we are pleased with the hope and help we have provided many patients dealing with varicose veins..

When varicose veins first appear as bulging cords of blue under your skin, it is often an alarming and discouraging discovery. In the vast majority of cases, this problem occurs in the legs and feet and causes your veins to appear twisted and badly swollen. The veins also may show unsightly splotches, caused by flooded capillaries. These are referred to as spider veins and are easily treated.

While these surface varicose veins are usually harmless, they can be painful, itchy, sensitive to the touch, and embarrassing. On the other hand, deeper veins may become varicose and these can present the danger of blood clots. While these problem veins are not visible, they cause pains and aches from the swelling, as well as ulcers. Varicose veins are actually a genetic condition and occur in women twice as often as men. Studies show more than 60 percent of all Americans suffer from this medical condition.

Understanding the Causes

Your arteries serve to circulate blood carrying needed oxygen throughout your body. To carry out this task, arteries are covered with layers of elastic tissue and special muscles. Once the body has drawn out the essential oxygen, it depends on your veins to return the blood to the lungs. This is accomplished with a system of one-way valves and the use of other muscles. These valves allow blood to flow through and keep it from returning.

When these valves malfunction, the blood will pool in the veins and cause swelling. The reason this problem affects legs and feet often is the added problem of pushing the excess blood up through the body. The continued pooling of the excess blood adds to the problem and creates extra pressure in the veins and on the valves. The pressure pushes first into surface veins and capillaries because they have less muscle and tissue support than the veins deeper in the body.

The problem of varicose veins can be caused by a number of factors. Anything creating added pressure on the lower extremities of your body can lead to varicose veins. For example, pregnancy is a common cause, as is chronic constipation. Living a sedentary lifestyle is a frequent cause of varicose veins due to muscles losing their ability to effectively pump your body's blood around your circulatory system. Fortunately, modern treatments and techniques can effectively treat most cases of varicose veins.
